Choosing Between Silicone And Saline Implants

Angela (not her real name) was unhappy that her breasts are not what they once were.

A couple of children, and they seemed to have lost their shape.

She longed for some form of augmentation, but had strong apprehensions about silicone implants.

Even though FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved silicone gels after an expert panel found them safe post litigation1992 (which withdrew them from the market in 1992), the stigma remains in the minds of many women.

The fear is not unfounded.

An analysis has revealed that silent ruptures occurred in about 9-12 percent of the cases, 6 to 8 years after implantation. Now the FDA is recommending women with silicone gel implants to get an MRI done three years after surgery.

But now a new implant is gaining acceptance. It does not contains silicone gel. Its unique design is supposed to give a natural feel.

An expert in breast implant surgery in Mount Airy says this novel design has a series of implant shells packed together and two distinct chambers holding saline filler.

“This design does not allow for folding and wrinkling, the main cause of silicone gel implant rupture and deflation”.

Yet, for most women it is not an easy choice.

They still vacillate between silicone and saline. The reason is some reports say women with silicone are happier after reconstruction than women who had saline.

When women desire breast implant surgery, Mount Airy MD plastic surgeons tend to be neutral with their choices. They do not recommend one type over another.

“It is all about each individual’s choice which fits with her preferences”, says an expert in breast implant surgery in Mount Airy.

Whichever type they choose, women want it to look natural and feel comfortable.
